Chemical Peel
What is Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels are a cosmetic procedure used to remove the outermost layer of skin on the face and other body parts. This process works by applying a chemical solution to the desired area, which causes the skin to peel off in a controlled manner. Chemical peels are used to treat a variety of skin concerns, including wrinkles, discoloration, acne, and sun damage. The chemical solution used during a chemical peel can vary from mild to strong, depending on the desired outcome. Milder peels can remove the outermost layer of skin cells to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Deeper peels are used to remove the outer and middle layers of skin, which can help to reduce the appearance of deeper wrinkles, age spots, and sun damage.
What to avoid?
While they are generally safe and well–tolerated, there are a few things that you should avoid after undergoing a chemical peel to help ensure a successful outcome.
1. Sun Exposure: Sun exposure is one of the biggest no–nos after a chemical peel. The freshly treated skin is more sensitive than usual, and sun exposure can lead to increased irritation, burning, and redness. It is important to stay out of the sun for at least one week after your peel and to use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 for the first month or so.
2. Exfoliating Products: Chemical peels exfoliate the skin, so it is important to avoid using any other exfoliating products for the first few weeks after your treatment. This includes scrubs, face wipes, and toners containing exfoliating ingredients.
3. Hot Water: Hot water can be very drying and irritating to freshly treated skin, so it is best to take lukewarm showers and to avoid hot baths.
4. Skin Care Products With AHA/BHA: Alpha and beta hydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid and salicylic acid, are often found in skin care products. For the first few weeks after your chemical peel, it is best to avoid using any products containing these ingredients.
5. Heavy Makeup: Heavy makeup can irritate freshly treated skin and can lead to breakouts. It is best to avoid wearing makeup for the first few days after your peel, and when you do start wearing makeup again, opt for light, non–comedogenic formulas.
What are the advantages?
Chemical peels can also help to reduce the appearance of age spots, sun spots, and hyperpigmentation. The chemical solution used in a chemical peel can help to lighten and even out the skin tone, leaving you with a more even complexion.
Another benefit of chemical peels is that they can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and collagen production slows down, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. Chemical peels can help to stimulate collagen production, leading to a firmer, more youthful looking complexion.
